WHO blood pressure classification

The Wellion WAVE Plus displays blood pressure values numerically and additionally classifies them via a color scale:

• Green: Blood pressure in the normal range

• Yellow: Elevated or borderline blood pressure

• Red: High blood pressure

The marker on the display shows the respective classification. The traffic light system facilitates orientation but does not replace a medical assessment.

Why check blood pressure at home?

High blood pressure often remains unnoticed for a long time, as many affected individuals initially feel no symptoms. Possible signs include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath. However, these symptoms can also have other causes.

High blood pressure also frequently occurs alongside risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, or elevated blood lipid levels.

Regular blood pressure monitoring at home supports the early detection of elevated levels and helps to observe the progress of medically prescribed treatment.

In medical practices, temporary higher blood pressure values can occur due to excitement. This phenomenon is known as the white-coat effect. Home measurements therefore complement professional blood pressure monitoring and allow for a more comprehensive assessment.

Measuring blood pressure correctly

For the most reliable and comparable results, the following instructions should be observed:

• Sit quietly for at least 3–5 minutes before measuring.

• Avoid physical exertion and excitement immediately beforehand.

• Empty your bladder before the measurement if possible.

• Avoid alcohol and nicotine for at least one hour beforehand.

• Do not talk or move during the measurement.

• Support the arm in a relaxed position at heart level.

• For the first check, measure blood pressure on both arms.

• Carry out further measurements preferably on the arm that consistently showed higher values.

• Pause for at least one minute between consecutive measurements.

When taking antihypertensive medication, document the time of the last dose.

Recognizing and treating high blood pressure

Permanently elevated blood pressure can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney damage.

Regular measurements and individually tailored treatment can help to reduce these risks.

Treatment is carried out in collaboration with the attending physician. Blood pressure medication must not be changed or discontinued independently based on individual measurements.
