Acceleration and swaying effects during movement are the main causes of motion sickness. This occurs primarily during long journeys by train, bus, ship, or airplane. However, with particular sensitivity, it can also occur during car and train journeys, which can affect the anticipation of a holiday or the stress of a business trip.

The most common symptoms of motion sickness include:

• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Increased pulse
• Sweating

A key advantage of Travelgum® chewing gum pastilles is that they are not taken as a preventative measure, but directly at the onset of the first symptoms of motion sickness. The calming effect occurs quickly because the active ingredient dimenhydrinate is absorbed through the oral mucosa during chewing. Dimenhydrinate acts directly on the organ of balance. An additional prophylactic intake of other anti-nausea medications is no longer necessary when carrying Travelgum®.

Motion sickness (nausea and vomiting during car, train, bus, plane, and ship journeys).

Application and Dosage

For known motion sickness, one Travelgum® 20 mg chewing gum pastille should be chewed for approximately 10 minutes 15–30 minutes before starting the journey. If symptoms persist, a second pastille should be chewed at the first signs.

For unknown motion sickness, Travelgum® should be chewed as early as possible at the onset of the first symptoms (nausea, vomiting).

Properties and Effect

The active ingredient dimenhydrinate contained in Travelgum® 20 mg chewing gum pastilles is an antihistamine that is particularly effective against nausea and vomiting. The active ingredient acts on the nerves of the organ of balance. By chewing the pastilles, the active ingredient is released and also absorbed into the bloodstream through the oral mucosa. This form of administration is particularly advantageous when travelling or for children, as the medication does not have to be swallowed and also works when nausea and vomiting have already occurred.

Note for Diabetics

One Travelgum® chewing gum pastille contains 0.416 g of sugar (equivalent to 0.04 BE).

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Travelgum® can have side effects, although not everybody gets them. Tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, or light-headedness can frequently occur. Dry mouth, gastrointestinal discomfort, or visual disturbances are occasionally possible. In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions can occur.

During use, the ability to react may be impaired. Caution is therefore advised when driving vehicles and operating machinery.
