What is Riopan and what is it used for?
Riopan contains the active ingredient magaldrate and binds excess stomach acid. Excessive acid binding, which would lead to increased acid secretion into the stomach, is avoided.
The natural digestive function is maintained, and bile acids that may flow back into the stomach are bound. The effect of Riopan usually lasts for several hours.
Riopan is used for heartburn and acid reflux.
Children and adolescents under 18 years of age should only take Riopan after medical advice.
If you do not feel better or even worse after 14 days, contact your doctor.
How to take Riopan?
Always take this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The recommended dose is:
For minor stomach complaints (e.g. heartburn, acid reflux), take 1 chewable tablet as needed.
Complaints usually occur after meals or at night (when lying down), so the usual dose is 1 chewable tablet one hour after main meals or before bedtime (= 4 times daily).
If acute symptoms occur between doses, you can increase the dosage to up to 8 doses daily.
You should not take more than 8 chewable tablets daily (equivalent to 6400 mg magaldrate).
In some cases, taking one dose can bring relief from symptoms. Stop taking it when symptoms subside.
Note on administration:
You can suck or chew the chewable tablets well.
Duration of treatment:
You can stop taking it when symptoms subside.
Riopan should not be taken for more than 14 consecutive days. See your doctor if your symptoms do not subside within this period, last longer than 14 days, worsen, or if additional symptoms occur. They will arrange diagnostic clarification to rule out other diseases.
Maximum daily dose:
You should not take more than 8 chewable tablets daily (equivalent to 6400 mg magaldrate).
Use in kidney function impairment:
In severely impaired kidney function, due to the risk of chronic aluminum poisoning, long-term and higher-dose use should only be carried out under medical supervision with regular blood level determinations of aluminum and magnesium.
Use in children and adolescents:
There is insufficient information for children under 12 years of age, so they should not take Riopan. In adolescents aged 12 to 18 years,
Riopan should only be used on explicit medical prescription.
If you have taken more Riopan than you should
Acute symptoms of poisoning with Riopan are not known.
If you forgot to take Riopan
Do not take a double dose if you forgot to take the previous dose.
Take the next dose if needed.
If you stop taking Riopan
You can stop taking it at any time if symptoms subside. If you have any further questions about the use of the medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
