Travel diarrhea and possible pathogens

Travel diarrhea can be caused by various pathogens.

Common bacterial triggers include certain enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains. Many uncomplicated cases of travel diarrhea are self-limiting and subside after a few days.

However, other pathogens such as:

• Salmonella

• Shigella

• Campylobacter

as well as other bacteria, viruses, or parasites can cause diarrheal diseases.

Such infections can sometimes have a more severe course and require medical treatment.

OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE is a dietary supplement and not a medicine for the prevention or treatment of travel diarrhea or gastrointestinal infections.

How does OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE work?

OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE contains a specially formulated combination of 10 selected human bacterial strains.

Each portion provides at least 5 billion bacteria capable of survival and reproduction.

The bacteria are combined with a matrix of various nutrients. These include, among others, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), corn dextrin, polydextrose, and other components.

These serve, among other things, as a nutritional basis for the bacterial cultures contained in the product.

The special OMNi-BiOTiC® matrix

A special feature of OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE is the composition of the powder in which the bacterial cultures are embedded.

In addition to the bacterial strains, the formula contains, among other things:

• fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

• corn dextrin

• polydextrose

• plant-based protein from rice

• minerals

• amylases

By stirring into liquid and the subsequent activation time, the bacteria are brought into contact with liquid and the components of the matrix before consumption.

The product does not require any additional encapsulation of the bacteria.

Recommended intake

Take 1 sachet of OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE (= 5 g) daily, starting a few days before the start of the trip.

Daily intake should be continued throughout the entire trip.

Stir the contents of one sachet into approx. 1/8 liter of water.

Alternatively, the powder can also be stirred into diluted fruit juice, milk, tea up to a maximum of 40 °C, yogurt, or similar foods.

Then wait at least 1 minute for activation, stir again, and consume.

It is recommended to take it on an empty stomach if possible, for example:

• in the morning before breakfast

• in the evening before dinner

• before going to bed

Important notes on preparation

The liquid in which OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE is dissolved:

• must not be hotter than 40 °C

• should not be coffee or alcohol

• should not have a very acidic pH value, such as cola, grapefruit juice, or vinegar

• should ideally not contain carbonation

Use in case of fructose intolerance

OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE contains, among other things, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which serve as a nutritional basis for the bacteria contained.

In cases of known fructose intolerance, the manufacturer recommends extending the activation time of OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE to 30 minutes.

During this extended activation time, the bacteria contained can metabolize a large portion of the added fructooligosaccharides.

According to the manufacturer, the product can also be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Important travel advice

OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE does not replace general measures for avoiding food- and water-borne infections.

Especially in regions with increased risk, careful attention should be paid to food and drinking water hygiene.

In the case of diarrhea, adequate fluid and electrolyte intake is particularly important.

If there is blood in the stool, high fever, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, circulatory problems, signs of dehydration, or severe or long-lasting diarrhea, medical help should be sought.

In the case of infants, small children, elderly people, or persons with a weakened immune system, medical advice should be sought particularly early in the event of severe diarrhea.

OMNi-BiOTiC® REISE is a dietary supplement and not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.

Side effects and tolerability

No general side effects are reported when used as directed.

Especially at the beginning of intake, the bacterial cultures and dietary fibers contained can cause temporary flatulence, a feeling of fullness, or changes in stool habits in sensitive individuals.

In cases of known fructose intolerance, the recommended extended activation time of 30 minutes should be observed.

The product should not be taken if there are known allergies or intolerances to any of the ingredients.

If diarrhea occurs during a trip, symptoms should not automatically be considered a temporary change caused by the product. In the case of severe, unusual, or persistent symptoms, a possible infection should be medically clarified.
