Multicarotene
What exactly is "Multicarotene"?
Mostly a mixture of carotenoids such as
-
Beta-carotene
-
Lutein / Zeaxanthin
-
Lycopene
often combined with vitamins (e.g. E, C). Carotenoids are fat-soluble plant pigments and precursors of vitamin A.
Positive effects on the skin
1. Antioxidant protection ("free radical scavenger")
Carotenoids scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are produced by UV radiation, among other things. They can therefore reduce oxidative stress in the skin and thus theoretically contribute to fewer UV-induced cell damages.
Reviews describe that regular intake of carotenoids can make the skin somewhat more resistant to light stress.
2. Minor "internal sun protection"
Meta-analyses and clinical studies show:
-
Higher beta-carotene intake for at least 10 weeks can slightly increase the erythema threshold, i.e., make the skin minimally less sensitive to sunburn.
-
The effect is significantly weaker than a good sunscreen and clinically limited.
Practice:
Multicarotene can support the skin, but it never replaces sunscreen, clothing, and shade.
3. Contribution to normal skin function
Beta-carotene is a provitamin A source. Vitamin A is important for:
-
normal cell division
-
building the epidermis
-
maintaining the skin barrier
Thus, sufficient carotenoid intake can indirectly support normal skin function
4. Skin color / "Glow"
Carotenoids accumulate in the skin and make it slightly golden-yellow. Studies show:
-
more carotenoids in the skin → yellowish, "healthy" looking complexion
-
Faces with a higher carotenoid-induced skin color are often perceived as more attractive and healthier.
Limitations & Safety
No real UV protection
-
Multicarotene does not reliably prevent sunburn.
-
Beta-carotene capsules do not sufficiently protect against UV damage, so communicate clearly:
