What is Fenivir and what is it used for?
Fenivir is a beige to light brown cream for the treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis) caused by herpes simplex. The cream should be applied as soon as possible when symptoms appear, when the lips start to "tingle" and/or when swelling/blisters begin to form.
It should not be used if crusts have formed. If you do not feel better or feel worse after 4 days, consult your doctor.
Fenivir inhibits the ability of the herpes simplex virus to multiply. The recovery time, pain duration, and visible signs of the virus are shortened by up to 24 hours.
How to use Fenivir?
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults and adolescents over 12 years
Apply as soon as possible after the first symptoms appear (e.g., tingling, itching). Some people do not notice these symptoms. However, Fenivir cream can still be used if initial swelling/blisters have appeared.
- Please wash your hands before and after applying the cream.
- Squeeze a small amount of cream onto your fingertip.
- Apply the cream every 2 hours during the day for 4 days.
If treating around mealtimes, you should apply the cream after eating. It may take some time for the cream to start working. Continue to use the cream even if the cold sore does not improve immediately. Use the cream for 4 days, unless you have received other instructions from your doctor.
Use in children
Fenivir cream must not be used in children under 12 years of age.
If you have used more Fenivir than you should
No undesirable effects are to be expected if you have applied a very large amount of cream to the skin at once; the skin might be slightly irritated. If accidentally swallowed, the cream is not harmful but may cause irritation in the mouth. No special treatment is necessary.
If a child accidentally uses the medicine inappropriately, please contact your doctor or a hospital.
If you forget to use Fenivir
Do not use a double dose if you have forgotten the previous application.
If you have any further questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
