What is Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4%?
Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4% is a sterile aqueous solution of natural Emser salt in a hypertonic concentration for inhalation with a jet or compressed air nebulizer, ultrasonic nebulizer or vibrating mesh nebulizer. Intended use: For inhalation for osmotically induced gentle increase in secretion mobilization. As a carrier solution for the inhalation of beta-sympathomimetics and anticholinergics.
The tonicity of Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4% corresponds to the tonicity of a 3% NaCl solution.
When is Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4% used?
Areas of application:
- in diseases of the lower respiratory tract associated with mucus solidification (e.g. acute bronchitis, acute bronchiolitis, cystic fibrosis)
- as a carrier solution for the inhalation of beta-sympathomimetics and anticholinergics For adults, adolescents and children from 1 year of age.
Important: Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4% is not compatible with ambroxol- and bromhexine-containing
medicinal products.
How does Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4% work?
Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4% ensures a gentle increase in secretion mobilization due to its osmotic effect through the hypertonic solution with simultaneous liquefaction of mucus. The activity of the ciliated cells is stimulated.
Thus, Emser® Inhalation Solution hypertonic 4% naturally supports the function of the self-cleaning mechanism of the airways, which has a positive effect, for example, in inflammation.

The disease-related absence of bicarbonate in cystic fibrosis is the reason why mucus clumps together and remains viscous in the affected organs such as the lungs.
Added bicarbonate improves the swelling and fluid content of the mucus by reducing cross-linking in the mucus. This reduces its viscosity and increases its transportability. In addition, bicarbonate itself can loosen or dissolve clumped mucus and thus improve
flow properties.
