The common bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) belongs to the heather family (Ericaceae). This evergreen dwarf shrub grows in mountainous regions of Europe, Asia, and North America and is easily recognized by its leathery leaves and bright red berries.

The plant has a long tradition in European and North American herbal medicine. Particularly the leaves of the bearberry have been valued and traditionally used for centuries.
