Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae) and is a traditional European medicinal plant. This perennial plant prefers to grow in damp meadows and on riverbanks, and is easily recognizable by its velvety hairy leaves and delicate pink flowers.

The root of the marshmallow, in particular, has been valued for centuries. Due to its high content of mucilage, the plant has a firm place in European herbalism and naturopathy.
