Allergies – Hypersensitivity Reactions of the Immune System
An allergy is an exaggerated reaction of the immune system to normally harmless substances from the environment. These substances are called allergens.
Depending on the trigger and the organ system affected, allergies can cause symptoms in the skin, eyes, nose, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, or throughout the body. The severity ranges from mild discomfort to severe allergic reactions.
How does an allergy develop?
In an allergy, the immune system mistakenly identifies certain harmless substances as dangerous. After a process called sensitization, renewed contact with the allergen can trigger an immune response.
In many immediate allergies, IgE antibodies and histamine play an important role. Histamine causes, among other things, itching, redness, swelling, increased mucus production, and vasodilation.
Common Allergy Triggers
The most common allergens include:
-
Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds
-
Dust mites
-
Pet dander
-
Molds
-
Foods
-
Insect venom
-
Medications
-
Latex
-
Certain contact substances, such as nickel or fragrances
What symptoms can occur?
Depending on the type of allergy, the following may occur:
-
Sneezing and runny or stuffy nose
-
Itchy, red, and watery eyes
-
Skin rash and itching
-
Hives (urticaria)
-
Swelling of skin and mucous membranes
-
Cough and breathing difficulties
-
Allergic asthma
-
Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
-
Circulatory problems
What allergic diseases are there?
Common allergic diseases include:
-
Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
-
Allergic conjunctivitis
-
Allergic asthma
-
Atopic dermatitis / neurodermatitis
-
Food allergies
-
Contact allergies
-
Insect venom allergies
-
Drug allergies
Anaphylaxis – Severe Allergic Reaction
The most severe form of an immediate allergic reaction is anaphylaxis. It can affect multiple organ systems simultaneously and become life-threatening within a short time.
Warning signs can include shortness of breath, swelling of the tongue or throat, circulatory collapse, severe weakness, or loss of consciousness.
Diagnosis and Treatment
For allergy diagnostics, depending on the symptoms, skin tests, blood tests for specific IgE antibodies, and, if necessary, controlled provocation tests can be used.
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the allergy. This includes avoiding known allergens as much as possible, as well as medications such as antihistamines or corticosteroids. For certain allergies, a specific immunotherapy (desensitization) can reduce the allergic reaction long-term.
If there is a risk of anaphylaxis, an emergency kit including an adrenaline auto-injector may be required.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, established homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various allergic diseases and symptoms according to the Banerji protocols.
Reliable treatment or elimination of an allergy through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Especially in cases of severe allergies, allergic asthma, or risk of anaphylaxis, necessary medical treatments and emergency medications must not be replaced by homeopathic treatment.
Important Note
If shortness of breath, swelling of the tongue or throat, circulatory problems, or disturbances of consciousness occur after contact with a possible allergen, anaphylaxis is suspected. This is a medical emergency.
