Anemia, Thalassemia, and Aplastic Anemia
Anemia (blood deficiency) occurs when the concentration of the red blood pigment hemoglobin in the blood is reduced. Hemoglobin is found in red blood cells (erythrocytes) and is responsible for transporting oxygen to organs and tissues.
Anemia can have many different causes. These include, for example, iron, vitamin B12, or folic acid deficiency, blood loss, chronic diseases, genetically determined changes in red blood cells, and bone marrow diseases.
What symptoms can anemia cause?
Depending on the cause and severity, the following may occur:
-
Fatigue and exhaustion
-
Reduced physical performance
-
Paleness
-
Dizziness and headaches
-
Concentration problems
-
Shortness of breath on exertion
-
Palpitations or accelerated pulse
-
General weakness
Thalassemia – hereditary disorder of hemoglobin formation
Thalassemia is a group of hereditary blood disorders in which the formation of certain components of hemoglobin is impaired. This can cause red blood cells to be smaller, more unstable, less functional, and break down more quickly.
A distinction is made primarily between alpha- and beta-thalassemia. The diseases can manifest very differently. Mild forms sometimes cause hardly any symptoms, while severe forms can lead to severe anemia already in childhood.
In severe thalassemia, regular blood transfusions and other specialized treatments may be necessary.
Aplastic Anemia – Disorder of Blood Formation in the Bone Marrow
Aplastic anemia is a rare but severe disease of the bone marrow. In this condition, not enough new blood cells are formed.
Not only red blood cells, but also white blood cells and platelets are often affected. This can lead to an increased susceptibility to infection and an increased bleeding tendency, in addition to the symptoms of anemia.
Possible causes include misguided immune reactions, certain medications or chemicals, radiation, and viral infections. In some cases, no clear cause can be determined.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is first made through a blood test. Depending on the suspicion, further laboratory tests, genetic tests, or a bone marrow examination may be necessary.
Treatment depends on the specific cause and can range from treating a nutrient deficiency to blood transfusions, special medications, or, in certain severe cases, a stem cell transplant.
Important Note
Anemia should not be treated without clarifying the cause. Persistent fatigue, severe paleness, shortness of breath, unusual bleeding, or significantly reduced performance should be medically clarified.
