Vaginitis, Vulvitis and Vaginal Candidiasis – Inflammation and Fungal Infections in the Intimate Area
Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina, while vulvitis refers to the inflammation of the external female genital area (vulva). If both areas are affected, it is called vulvovaginitis.
The symptoms can arise from infections, changes in the vaginal flora, hormonal influences or irritations. A common infectious cause is vaginal candidiasis, a fungal infection predominantly caused by yeasts of the genus Candida.
How do Vaginitis and Vulvitis develop?
The vagina has a natural vaginal flora, in which lactobacilli, in particular, contribute to maintaining an acidic environment. If this balance is disturbed, certain pathogens can multiply more easily.
Possible causes include:
-
Fungal infections by Candida
-
Bacterial infections or changes in the vaginal flora
-
Sexually transmitted infections
-
Hormonal changes, especially estrogen deficiency
-
Antibiotic treatments
-
Diabetes mellitus
-
Weakened immune system
-
Irritations from intimate hygiene products or other substances
-
Mechanical irritation
Vaginal Candidiasis – Vaginal Thrush
Vulvovaginal candidiasis is usually caused by Candida albicans. Candida can also be part of the normal mucous membrane flora without causing symptoms. Only an excessive proliferation leads to the disease.
Typical symptoms include:
-
Intense itching
-
Burning in the intimate area
-
Redness and swelling of the vulva
-
Whitish, often thick or crumbly discharge
-
Pain or burning during urination
-
Pain during sexual intercourse
Other Causes of Similar Symptoms
Itching, burning, and discharge do not automatically mean a fungal infection is present. Similar symptoms can be caused, for example, by bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, other infections, skin conditions, or hormonally induced mucous membrane changes.
A correct diagnosis is especially important for first-time or recurrent symptoms.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. Vaginal candidiasis is usually treated with antifungal agents, for example, locally as vaginal tablets or creams, or in certain cases, as oral therapy.
For frequently recurring fungal infections, possible contributing factors should be investigated.
Bacterial or sexually transmitted infections, on the other hand, require a different targeted treatment.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various disease and symptom profiles.
The reliable elimination of a vaginal Candida or bacterial infection through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. A necessary antifungal, antibiotic, or other medical treatment should therefore not be replaced or delayed.
Important Note
Severe lower abdominal pain, fever, bleeding, foul-smelling or unusually discolored discharge, as well as symptoms during pregnancy, should be promptly clarified by a gynecologist. Frequent recurrent symptoms also require medical clarification.
