Rheumatoid Arthritis - Chronic Inflammatory Joint Disease
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints. In this condition, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, particularly the synovial membrane.
Left untreated, persistent inflammation can permanently damage cartilage, bone, and joints. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are particularly important.
Which joints are frequently affected?
Typically, several joints are affected simultaneously and often symmetrically on both sides of the body. Particularly common sites include:
-
Metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints
-
Wrists
-
Metatarsophalangeal joints
-
Knees
-
Ankles
-
Elbows
-
Shoulders
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms include:
-
Joint pain
-
Swelling and warmth of the joints
-
Morning stiffness, often prolonged
-
Restricted mobility
-
Loss of strength
-
Fatigue and exhaustion
-
General malaise
-
Occasionally mild fever
Without adequate treatment, joint deformities and permanent functional impairments can develop in the further course of the disease.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Affects More Than Just Joints
As a systemic autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis can also affect other organs and tissues. Possible changes include those in:
-
Tendons and bursae
-
Skin
-
Eyes
-
Lungs
-
Heart and blood vessels
-
Nervous system
In some patients, so-called rheumatoid nodules may appear under the skin.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves a joint examination, as well as various laboratory and imaging procedures.
Tests may include, for example:
-
Inflammation markers such as CRP and ESR
-
Rheumatoid factor
-
Anti-CCP antibodies
-
Ultrasound of the joints
-
X-rays
-
If necessary, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
A positive rheumatoid factor alone does not prove rheumatoid arthritis. Similarly, RA can also be present with a negative rheumatoid factor.
Treatment
The goal of treatment is to control inflammation as completely as possible and to prevent permanent joint damage.
Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), such as methotrexate, play a central role. Depending on disease activity, further conventional, biological, or targeted synthetic medications may be used.
Additionally, pain and inflammation management, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and regular adapted exercise can be beneficial.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for different rheumatic disease and symptom patterns.
Reliable control of autoimmune inflammation or prevention of joint destruction through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary rheumatological treatment with disease-modifying drugs should not be replaced or independently discontinued.
Important Note
Newly occurring persistent joint swelling, pain, and pronounced morning stiffness should be evaluated rheumatologically early. The sooner rheumatoid arthritis is effectively treated, the better permanent joint damage can be prevented.
