Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
A traumatic brain injury results from external force applied to the head, leading to a temporary or permanent impairment of brain function or structural damage. The medical term traumatic brain injury (TBI) encompasses skull injuries involving the brain.
Injuries can range from a mild concussion to severe damage to brain tissue.
How does a traumatic brain injury occur?
Common causes include:
-
Falls
-
Traffic accidents
-
Sports and leisure accidents
-
Workplace accidents
-
Blows or other strong forces to the head
-
Strong acceleration and deceleration movements of the head
Due to the force, the brain can be moved, crushed, or otherwise injured within the skull. Additionally, bleeding, swelling, or increased intracranial pressure can occur.
What forms are there?
Depending on the severity, different injuries can occur:
-
Concussion (Commotio cerebri): mild form with temporary brain dysfunction
-
Cerebral contusion (Contusio cerebri): damage to brain tissue due to stronger force
-
Intracranial hemorrhages: bleeding within the skull, e.g., subdural, epidural, or intracerebral hemorrhages
-
Diffuse axonal injury: damage to nerve fibers due to strong acceleration or rotational forces
What symptoms can occur?
Possible symptoms include:
-
Headaches
-
Dizziness and balance disorders
-
Nausea and vomiting
-
Drowsiness or loss of consciousness
-
Memory gaps
-
Concentration and memory disorders
-
Vision problems
-
Speech disorders
-
Confusion or behavioral changes
-
Paralysis or sensory disturbances
-
Epileptic seizures
Some symptoms may appear immediately after the injury, while others develop later.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the injury. In addition to a neurological examination, imaging procedures such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be necessary.
For severe injuries, inpatient or intensive care treatment, as well as surgical procedures, may be required. After a brain injury, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and neuropsychological rehabilitation can be used to restore or improve impaired functions.
Important Note
After a head injury, increasing headaches, repeated vomiting, severe drowsiness, altered consciousness, seizures, paralysis, speech disorders, or increasing confusion are warning signs that require immediate medical attention.
