Bronchial Asthma – Chronic Inflammatory Airway Disease
Bronchial asthma is a usually chronic, inflammatory disease of the airways (bronchi). The bronchi react hypersensitively to various stimuli and can temporarily narrow. This leads to episodic or persistent symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness.
Airway narrowing in asthma is typically variable and at least partially reversible – spontaneously or with appropriate medication.
How does asthma develop?
In asthma, there is a chronic inflammatory predisposition of the bronchial mucosa. Upon contact with certain triggers, the muscles around the bronchi can constrict, the mucous membrane can swell, and produce more mucus.
This narrows the airways and makes exhaling particularly difficult.
What types and triggers are there?
Asthma can have different causes and triggers. These include:
- Allergies to pollen, house dust mites, animal dander, or mold
- viral respiratory infections
- physical exertion
- cold or dry air
- tobacco smoke
- air pollutants and strong odors
- occupational allergens and irritants
- certain medications
- stress and strong emotional strain can worsen existing symptoms
For many affected individuals, several factors play a role simultaneously.
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms include:
- episodic shortness of breath
- wheezing or whistling breath
- chest tightness
- coughing, especially at night or in the early morning
- prolonged or difficult exhalation
- coughing or shortness of breath during physical exertion
Between individual episodes, affected individuals may be completely symptom-free.
Allergic Asthma
In allergic asthma, symptoms are triggered by specific allergens. Often, allergic rhinitis (hay fever) occurs simultaneously.
Early diagnosis and consistent treatment of allergic respiratory diseases can be important for long-term symptom control.
Diagnosis
In addition to the patient's medical history, diagnosis primarily involves lung function tests, such as:
- Spirometry
- Bronchodilator test
- if necessary, provocation tests
- Peak flow measurements
If allergic asthma is suspected, allergy tests may also be performed.
Treatment
Modern asthma therapy primarily aims to control airway inflammation and treat acute bronchial constriction.
Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) play a central role. Depending on the severity and type of asthma, these are combined with other inhaled or systemic medications.
Treatment is tailored individually. A personal asthma action plan can help to identify worsening conditions early and react appropriately.
Acute Asthma Attack
During an asthma attack, the airways narrow significantly, sometimes within a short period. Affected individuals may experience increasing difficulty breathing and speaking.
A severe asthma attack can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical treatment.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for different disease and symptom patterns according to the Banerji Protocols.
Reliable control of chronic airway inflammation or treatment of an acute asthma attack with homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Prescribed asthma medications, especially anti-inflammatory inhalation therapies and emergency medications, must therefore not be independently replaced or discontinued with homeopathic treatment.
Important Note
In cases of severe shortness of breath, difficulty speaking, bluish discoloration of the lips or skin, disturbances of consciousness, or lack of effect of prescribed emergency medication, a medical emergency exists.
