Epistaxis (Nosebleeds) and Nasal Polyps

Epistaxis is the medical term for nosebleeds. It occurs due to an injury or spontaneous bleeding of small blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane. The bleeding source is particularly common in the anterior part of the nasal septum, where numerous fine blood vessels run closely beneath the mucous membrane.

Nasal polyps, in contrast, are benign, soft growths of the mucous membrane in the nose or paranasal sinuses. They can obstruct nasal breathing and frequently occur in connection with chronic inflammation of the nasal and paranasal sinus mucous membranes.

How do nosebleeds occur?

Common causes and predisposing factors include:

• dry or irritated nasal mucous membrane

• vigorous nose blowing or manipulation inside the nose

• colds and inflammations

• nasal injuries

• decongestant or other locally applied nasal preparations with prolonged or incorrect use

• coagulation disorders

• anticoagulant medications

• changes or diseases of the nasal mucous membrane

• rarely vascular changes or tumors

High blood pressure can play a role, especially in more severe nosebleeds, but it is not automatically the sole cause.

Which symptoms can occur?

In epistaxis, the following may occur:

• bleeding from one or both nostrils

• blood running down the throat

• bloody taste in the mouth

• with greater blood loss, dizziness, weakness, or circulatory problems

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps usually develop on the basis of long-standing inflammation of the mucous membranes.

Typical symptoms include:

• persistently blocked nose

• impaired nasal breathing

• reduced or absent sense of smell

• feeling of pressure in the face

• recurrent sinusitis

• mucus flowing down the throat (post-nasal drip)

• snoring

Nasal polyps themselves do not typically cause nosebleeds. Recurrent unilateral bleeding or a unilateral mass should therefore be clarified by an ENT specialist.

Diagnosis and Treatment

For frequently recurrent nosebleeds, an ENT examination may be necessary. Visible bleeding sources can be cauterized if appropriate.

For nasal polyps, corticosteroid nasal sprays are particularly used. For pronounced polyps, further medicinal treatments or surgical removal or sinus surgery may be necessary.

What to do for acute nosebleeds?

For nosebleeds, one should sit upright and tilt the head slightly forward. The soft parts of the nose should be squeezed together continuously for about 10 to 15 minutes. The head should not be tilted backward, as blood could otherwise run into the throat.

Reliable treatment of recurrent nosebleeds or the regression of nasal polyps through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. The cause of recurrent bleeding or pronounced polyps should therefore be medically clarified.

Important Note

Very heavy bleeding, circulatory problems, or nosebleeds that do not stop despite 15 to 20 minutes of consistently squeezing the nose should be urgently medically clarified. Recurrent unilateral nosebleeds should also be examined by an ENT specialist.
