Spinal Tumors – Primary Tumors and Metastases

Spinal tumors are benign or malignant growths that can affect the vertebral bodies, spinal cord, spinal meninges, or nerve structures.

In adults, metastases from other cancers to the spine are significantly more common than primary malignant tumors originating directly from the spine.

What forms do they take?

Spinal Cord Compression – Emergency

A tumor or metastasis can compress the spinal cord or nerve structures. Such spinal cord compression can lead to permanent neurological damage within a short period.

Warning signs include:

• new or increasing muscle weakness

• paralysis

• gait disturbances

• numbness

• urination difficulties

• loss of bladder or bowel control

• numbness in the genital or perineal area

These symptoms require immediate medical evaluation.

Confirm the diagnosis

If a spinal tumor is suspected, a precise diagnosis is necessary. This may include:

• neurological and orthopedic examination

• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

• Computed Tomography (CT)

• blood tests

• if applicable, PET/CT

• in cases of unclear findings, tissue sampling (biopsy)

Before tumor-specific treatment, the exact nature of the disease should be determined as precisely as possible.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the tumor type, location, spread, and neurological symptoms.

Depending on the findings, options may include:

• surgical removal or spinal cord decompression

• spinal stabilization

• radiation therapy

• chemotherapy

• hormonal therapy for appropriate tumors

• pain therapy

For spinal metastases, treatment is also guided by the underlying cancer.
