Tinnitus – Ear Noises

Tinnitus is the perception of sounds in the ear or head for which, in most cases, there is no corresponding external sound source. Tinnitus can occur unilaterally or bilaterally, temporarily or permanently.

The perceived sounds can vary greatly. Sufferers describe them, for example, as whistling, rushing, humming, buzzing, hissing, or ringing.

How does Tinnitus develop?

Tinnitus is not a disease in the strict sense, but rather a symptom that can have various causes. It is often associated with changes in the auditory system.

Possible causes and triggers include:

  • Hearing impairment or age-related hearing loss

  • Loud or prolonged noise exposure

  • Acoustic trauma

  • Inner ear diseases

  • Sudden hearing loss

  • Meniere's disease

  • Ear infections

  • Certain medications

  • Diseases or changes of the auditory nerve

  • Rarer vascular or neurological diseases

Stress and psychological strain can further exacerbate existing tinnitus or influence its perception.

Acute and Chronic Tinnitus

Tinnitus can appear suddenly and disappear again after a short time. If the ear noises persist for a longer period, it is referred to as chronic tinnitus.

The burden varies greatly from person to person. Some people hardly notice the sound, while others are significantly affected by sleep disturbances, concentration problems, or a constant perception of noise.

Tinnitus and Inner Ear

The inner ear and the downstream auditory pathways play an important role in many forms of tinnitus. Changes in the processing of auditory signals can lead to the nervous system perceiving sounds even though there is no corresponding external sound source.

Diagnosis and Treatment

New or persistent tinnitus should be examined by an ENT doctor. This involves particularly examining the hearing and possible ear diseases.

Treatment depends on the cause. In chronic tinnitus, treatment of existing hearing loss, hearing aids, tinnitus counseling, and cognitive behavioral therapy methods can be used, among others.

Important Note

Suddenly occurring tinnitus in conjunction with hearing loss or severe dizziness should be promptly clarified by a doctor. Pulsatile tinnitus, which is perceived in the rhythm of the heartbeat, should also be medically examined.
