What is a Breast Fibroadenoma?

A breast fibroadenoma is the most common benign tumor of the female breast. It is a nodular tissue change consisting of glandular and connective tissue. Fibroadenomas are particularly common in young women between the ages of 20 and 40.

The lumps are usually smoothly demarcated, easily movable, and often cause no symptoms. Some women experience a feeling of tension or increased pressure sensitivity before menstruation.

How does a Breast Fibroadenoma develop?

The exact cause is not fully understood. It is believed that hormonal influences – particularly estrogens – play an important role. Possible factors include:

• Hormonal changes

• Increased sensitivity of breast tissue to estrogens

• Genetic predisposition

• Age and hormonal life stage
