Quincke's Edema / Angioedema – subcutaneous and submucosal allergic swelling

Quincke's edema, now mostly referred to as angioedema, is a sudden, usually clearly visible swelling of the deeper skin layers (subcutaneous) or mucous membranes (submucosal).

Lips, eyelids, face, tongue, and throat are particularly frequently affected. Hands, feet, genital area, and the gastrointestinal tract can also be affected.

Angioedema can occur as part of an allergic reaction. However, there are also non-allergic forms.

How does angioedema develop?

Due to a temporarily increased permeability of small blood vessels, fluid leaks into the surrounding tissue. This causes a sometimes pronounced swelling within a short time.

The following are distinguished in particular:

• allergic or histamine-mediated angioedema, often together with hives (urticaria)

• drug-induced angioedema, for example, by ACE inhibitors

• hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare inherited disease

• acquired or other non-allergic angioedema

Possible allergic triggers

Possible triggers include:

• foods

• medications

• insect venoms

• latex

• other allergens

In an allergic reaction, itching, skin redness, and urticaria can occur simultaneously.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical are sudden swellings of:

• lips

• eyelids

• face

• tongue

• oral and pharyngeal mucosa

• hands and feet

• genital area

If the gastrointestinal tract is involved, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur.

Swelling of the tongue, throat, and larynx

Angioedema in the area of the tongue, throat, or larynx is particularly dangerous, as the swelling can narrow the airways.

Warning signs are:

• increasing tongue or throat swelling

• difficulty swallowing

• hoarseness or changed voice

• feeling of tightness in the throat

• shortness of breath

• wheezing or noisy breathing

Diagnosis and treatment

Treatment depends on the cause. Allergic, histamine-mediated angioedema is treated differently from bradykinin-mediated or hereditary angioedema.

In severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis, adrenaline is the crucial emergency medication. Recurrent angioedema should be clarified by an allergist or internist.

Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic medicines and potencies are used for different allergic disease and symptom patterns according to the Banerji protocols.

Acute angioedema in the area of the tongue, throat, or larynx must not be treated homeopathically as the sole measure. A reliable prevention of life-threatening airway obstruction by homeopathic remedies has not been scientifically proven. Necessary emergency treatment must not be delayed under any circumstances.
