Snoring – nocturnal breathing sounds / consideration of possible sleep apnea
Snoring (rhonchopathy) is caused by vibrations of soft tissues in the upper airways during sleep. The soft palate, uvula, pharynx, and base of the tongue are particularly often involved.
Occasional snoring is common and not necessarily pathological. However, severe, regular snoring can indicate a narrowing of the upper airways and should be investigated for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), especially if breathing pauses occur.
How does snoring occur?
During sleep, muscle tension in the pharynx decreases. This narrows the airways. When inhaling and exhaling, the surrounding soft tissues can vibrate and produce the typical snoring sound.
Contributing factors include:
-
Obesity and increased neck circumference
-
Sleeping on your back
-
Alcohol consumption in the evening
-
Sleeping pills and tranquilizers
-
Blocked nose
-
Allergic or chronic rhinitis
-
Nasal polyps
-
Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
-
Anatomical constrictions in the nasal and pharyngeal area
-
Receding lower jaw
-
Increasing age
What additional symptoms can occur?
With simple snoring, there are often no further symptoms.
Indications of possible sleep apnea are:
-
Very loud and irregular snoring
-
Observed breathing pauses during sleep
-
Sudden gasping for air or feeling of choking
-
Frequent nocturnal awakenings
-
Dry mouth in the morning
-
Morning headaches
-
Pronounced daytime sleepiness
-
Concentration problems
-
Non-restorative sleep
Snoring and Sleep Apnea
In obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airways repeatedly partially or completely close during sleep. This leads to breathing pauses and repeated drops in oxygen saturation.
Untreated sleep apnea can be associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, cardiac arrhythmias, and traffic accidents due to daytime sleepiness, among other things.
Diagnosis and Treatment
For regular severe snoring with suspected sleep apnea, an examination using nocturnal polygraphy or polysomnography in a sleep laboratory may be necessary.
Treatment depends on the cause and may include, for example:
-
Weight reduction for overweight individuals
-
Avoiding alcohol before bedtime
-
Treatment of obstructed nasal breathing
-
Changing sleeping position
-
Mandibular advancement splints
-
For sleep apnea, CPAP therapy
-
Surgical measures in selected cases
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for different disease and symptom patterns.
A reliable elimination of anatomical airway constrictions or treatment of obstructive sleep apnea by homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary sleep medical or ENT diagnostics should not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
In cases of regular breathing pauses, nocturnal gasping for air, pronounced daytime sleepiness, or tendency to fall asleep while driving, possible sleep apnea should be medically clarified promptly.
