Mumps (epidemic parotitis) – viral infection with inflammation of the parotid glands "Support" Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

Epidemic parotitis (mumps) – viral infection with inflammation of the salivary glands

Mumps, medically known as epidemic parotitis, is a contagious viral infection caused by the mumps virus. It is characterized by painful swelling of the parotid glands (glandula parotis), which can occur on one or both sides.

Mumps does not exclusively affect the salivary glands. The virus can also affect other organs, particularly the central nervous system, testicles, ovaries, and pancreas.

Transmission

The mumps virus is primarily transmitted through infectious respiratory secretions and saliva, for example, through:

  • droplets and aerosols

  • close personal contact

  • kissing

  • sharing objects contaminated with saliva

Infected individuals can transmit the virus even before the typical swelling of the parotid gland becomes clearly visible.

Typical Symptoms

The disease may initially begin with non-specific symptoms:

  • fever

  • fatigue

  • headaches

  • muscle aches

  • loss of appetite

  • general malaise

Subsequently, the typical parotitis may develop.

Inflammation of the parotid gland

The parotid gland is located in front of and below the ear.

With mumps, the following symptoms may occur:

  • painful swelling in front of and below the ear

  • unilateral or bilateral facial swelling

  • pain when chewing

  • pain when swallowing

  • pain when opening the mouth

  • pressure sensation in the area of the salivary gland

  • ear pain

The swelling can characteristically widen the face.

However, not every mumps infection causes pronounced salivary gland swelling. Some infections are mild or largely asymptomatic.

Mumps orchitis – inflammation of the testicles

An important complication in male adolescents and adult men is orchitis, an inflammation of the testicle.

Possible symptoms include:

  • severe testicular pain

  • swelling of the testicle

  • redness

  • tenderness

  • fever

  • pronounced malaise

The inflammation can affect one or both testicles.

After severe orchitis, the affected testicle may shrink. Impaired fertility is possible; however, permanent complete infertility is significantly less common.

Sudden, severe testicular pain must always be examined by a doctor promptly, as testicular torsion, in particular, must be ruled out.

Mumps in women

In women, mumps can rarely cause inflammation of the ovaries (oophoritis).

Possible symptoms include:

  • lower abdominal pain

  • fever

  • general malaise

Inflammation of the mammary gland (mastitis) can also occur in connection with mumps.

Meningitis and encephalitis

The mumps virus can affect the central nervous system.

Possible conditions include:

  • aseptic or viral meningitis

  • encephalitis

Warning signs are:

  • severe headaches

  • neck stiffness

  • pronounced light sensitivity

  • vomiting

  • confusion

  • disturbances of consciousness

  • seizures

Such symptoms require immediate medical clarification.

Hearing loss

A rare but important complication of mumps is damage to the inner ear resulting in hearing impairment or hearing loss.

Sudden hearing loss should therefore be clarified immediately by a doctor or ENT specialist.

Pancreatitis

Mumps can occasionally be accompanied by pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

Possible symptoms include:

  • severe upper abdominal pain

  • nausea

  • vomiting

  • loss of appetite

Not every parotitis is mumps

Swelling or inflammation of the parotid gland can have numerous other causes.

These include:

  • bacterial salivary gland inflammation

  • salivary stones

  • other viral infections

  • abscesses

  • autoimmune diseases

  • certain medications

  • tumors of the salivary gland

Therefore, parotid swelling does not automatically mean that mumps is present.

Diagnosis

If mumps is suspected, specific laboratory tests can be performed in addition to the clinical examination.

These include, in particular, molecular biological methods for detecting the mumps virus. Depending on the stage of the disease and the situation, further examinations may be necessary.

Treatment

There is no specific standard antiviral therapy for mumps.

Treatment is primarily symptomatic and may include:

  • physical rest

  • adequate fluid intake

  • appropriate pain and fever medication

  • if necessary, local cooling for painful swelling

  • medical monitoring for complications

In cases of orchitis, neurological symptoms, or other severe complications, targeted medical treatment is required.

Mumps vaccination

The most important preventive measure is the mumps vaccination, which is usually administered as a combined measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Vaccination reduces the risk of mumps and especially severe disease courses and complications.

Since the MMR vaccine is a live vaccine, it is not administered during pregnancy.

Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for parotitis, glandular swelling, and associated complaints.

A reliable elimination of the mumps virus, shortening of the infection, or prevention of complications such as orchitis, meningitis, encephalitis, or hearing loss through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven.

Homeopathic remedies, in particular, do not replace vaccination protection. In cases of severe symptoms or complications, necessary medical treatment must not be replaced or delayed by homeopathic remedies.

Important Note

Prompt medical clarification is required for severe testicular pain or swelling, severe headaches with neck stiffness, changes in consciousness, seizures, sudden hearing impairment, severe abdominal pain, or a significant worsening of the general condition.

If mumps is suspected, due to the risk of contagion, contact should preferably be made by telephone before visiting a practice so that appropriate infection control measures can be taken.
