Allergic rhinitis – allergic cold / hay fever

Allergic rhinitis, also known as allergic cold, is an allergic inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane. It results from an overreaction of the immune system to substances from the environment that are actually harmless.

In the case of seasonal allergic rhinitis caused by pollen, it is often referred to as hay fever. However, symptoms can also occur year-round, for example, with an allergy to house dust mites or animal allergens.

How does allergic rhinitis develop?

After sensitization, the immune system reacts upon renewed contact with the respective allergen. In particular, IgE antibodies and the release of histamine play an important role.

Common triggers are:

• grass, tree, and weed pollen

• house dust mites

• animal allergens

• molds

• various occupational allergens

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• frequent or paroxysmal sneezing

• watery runny nose

• blocked nose

• itching in the nose

• difficulty breathing through the nose

• reduced sense of smell

• itching in the throat

• coughing or throat clearing

The eyes are often affected simultaneously. Itchy, red, watery, or swollen eyes may occur. This is known as allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.

Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis

In seasonal rhinitis, symptoms occur mainly during the respective pollen season.

Perennial allergic rhinitis can be caused, for example, by house dust mites, animal allergens, or molds and persist for longer periods.

Allergic rhinitis and asthma

The nose and bronchi form functionally connected airways. People with allergic rhinitis have an increased risk of also developing allergic asthma.

Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or a feeling of tightness in the chest should therefore be medically investigated.

Diagnosis and treatment

For clarification, a skin test (prick test) and blood tests for specific IgE antibodies can be performed.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of symptoms. These include:

• avoidance or reduction of allergen contact as much as possible

• antihistamines

• corticosteroid nasal sprays

• other anti-allergic nasal or eye preparations

• saline solutions or nasal rinses

For certain allergies, a specific immunotherapy (desensitization) can be used. In this process, the immune system is gradually accustomed to the responsible allergen over a longer period.

Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various allergic disease and symptom pictures according to the Banerji protocols.

A specific efficacy of homeopathic remedies for the treatment of allergic rhinitis or for a lasting change in the underlying allergy has not been scientifically proven. Necessary allergological diagnostics and treatment should therefore not be replaced or delayed.

Important note

If shortness of breath, wheezing, or a feeling of tightness in the chest also occur, a possible involvement of the lower respiratory tract or allergic asthma should be medically clarified.
