What are thyroid nodules?

Thyroid nodules are circumscribed tissue changes within the thyroid gland. They are among the most common changes in this organ and are often discovered incidentally during an ultrasound examination. Most thyroid nodules are benign and do not cause symptoms for a long time.

However, depending on their size and location, symptoms such as a feeling of pressure in the neck, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or a feeling of a "lump in the throat" may occur. Some nodules also produce thyroid hormones and can therefore lead to hyperthyroidism.

How do thyroid nodules develop?

The causes of thyroid nodules are diverse. The most common include:

• Iodine deficiency

• Age-related changes in the thyroid gland

• Benign tissue growths (adenomas)

• Cysts

• Inflammatory changes

• Genetic predisposition

Only a small proportion of thyroid nodules are malignant. Therefore, newly discovered nodules should always be medically examined and regularly monitored.
