Dry Cough – Irritating Cough without Sputum
Dry cough or irritating cough refers to a cough where no or very little mucus or sputum is coughed up from the respiratory tract. It often results from irritation or inflammation of the mucous membranes in the throat, larynx, or bronchi.
Dry cough can occur acutely as part of a respiratory infection or persist over a longer period. Especially at night, a persistent cough reflex can significantly impair sleep.
How does dry cough develop?
The cough reflex is a natural protective mechanism of the respiratory tract. When sensitive receptors in the airways are irritated, a cough is triggered.
Possible causes include:
-
Colds and other viral respiratory infections
-
Beginning or subsiding of acute bronchitis
-
Laryngitis or pharyngitis
-
Bronchial asthma
-
Allergies
-
Dry air
-
Smoke, dust, or other irritants
-
Gastroesophageal reflux
-
Certain medications, especially ACE inhibitors
-
COVID-19 and other respiratory infections
-
Rarer lung or heart diseases
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms are:
-
Dry, barking, or spasmodic cough
-
Cough without sputum
-
Constant urge to cough or clear the throat
-
Scratchy or dry sensation in the throat
-
Pain behind the breastbone after frequent coughing
-
Hoarseness
-
Nighttime coughing fits
-
Irritated or dry mucous membranes
Dry cough after a cold
After a respiratory infection, an irritating dry cough can persist for several weeks, even after other symptoms have subsided. This is often caused by a temporarily increased sensitivity of the airways.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. Supportive measures such as adequate fluid intake, avoiding smoke and other irritants, and maintaining sufficient humidity can be helpful.
In cases of severe, especially nocturnal, irritating cough, cough suppressants (antitussives) may be considered for a limited time. For asthma, reflux, allergies, or other underlying conditions, the respective cause must be treated.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for different forms of cough and respiratory complaints, following the Banerji protocols.
The specific efficacy of homeopathic remedies for treating a dry cough is not scientifically proven. For prolonged or unexplained cough, the cause should be medically investigated.
Important note
Dry cough should be medically evaluated if it persists for several weeks, recurs, or is associated with shortness of breath, fever, chest pain, weight loss, or coughing up blood.
Suddenly occurring severe shortness of breath or coughing up blood requires immediate medical attention.
