Rhinitis – Inflammation and Irritation of the Nasal Mucosa

Rhinitis refers to inflammation or irritation of the nasal mucosa. Typical symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and difficulty breathing through the nose.

Rhinitis can be acute or chronic and have various causes. These particularly include infections, allergies, and non-allergic irritations of the nasal mucosa.

What are the types of rhinitis?

The most important forms include:

• Infectious rhinitis: usually caused by common cold viruses

• Allergic rhinitis: for example, due to pollen, house dust mites, animal allergens, or molds

• Non-allergic rhinitis: reaction to, for example, temperature changes, smoke, strong odors, or other irritants

• Medication-induced rhinitis (rhinitis medicamentosa): can particularly arise from long-term use of decongestant nasal sprays

• Hormonal rhinitis: for example, during pregnancy

• Chronic rhinitis: prolonged inflammation or irritation of the nasal mucosa

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• runny nose

• stuffy nose

• difficulty breathing through the nose

• frequent sneezing

• itching in the nose

• watery or mucous nasal discharge

• reduced sense of smell

• pressure in the nasal area

• postnasal drip

• sometimes coughing or throat clearing

In allergic rhinitis, itchy, red, or watery eyes often occur in addition.

Rhinitis and Paranasal Sinuses

Significant swelling of the nasal mucosa can impair the ventilation and secretion drainage of the paranasal sinuses. If the nose and sinuses are inflamed simultaneously, it is referred to as rhinosinusitis.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause.

In viral rhinitis, symptomatic relief measures are usually prioritized. Saline solutions or nasal rinses can moisturize the mucous membranes and remove secretions.

For allergic rhinitis, antihistamines and corticosteroid nasal sprays can be used depending on the severity. For certain allergies, specific immunotherapy (desensitization) may be an option.

Decongestant nasal sprays should only be used for a short period, as long-term use can lead to a chronically stuffy nose itself.
