Menstrual Pain – Dysmenorrhea / Painful Menstruation

Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstruation. Typically, there are cramping pains in the lower abdomen that begin shortly before or with the onset of menstruation and often radiate to the back or thighs.

Menstrual pain is very common. It can be mild, but for some women, it can become so severe that daily life, school, or work are significantly affected.

How does menstrual pain occur?

During menstruation, the uterine muscles contract to shed the uterine lining. Endogenous signaling substances, particularly prostaglandins, play an important role in this. Increased prostaglandin activity can cause stronger uterine contractions and pain.

Two forms are distinguished:

  • Primary dysmenorrhea: Menstrual pain without demonstrable organic disease. It often begins in adolescence.

  • Secondary dysmenorrhea: The pain arises due to an underlying disease.

What conditions can cause menstrual pain?

In the case of secondary dysmenorrhea, possible causes include:

  • Endometriosis

  • Adenomyosis

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Inflammation in the lesser pelvis

  • Changes in the uterus or cervix

  • In certain cases, an IUD as a contraceptive

In particular, newly occurring or increasingly severe menstrual pain should be clarified gynaecologically.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

  • Cramping lower abdominal pain

  • Back pain

  • Pain radiating to the thighs

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea or other bowel problems

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue and general malaise

Treatment

Warmth and physical exercise can be helpful for milder symptoms. For more severe pain, anti-inflammatory painkillers that inhibit prostaglandin production are often used.

Hormonal contraception methods can also reduce menstrual pain. If an underlying condition such as endometriosis or a fibroid is present, the treatment depends on the specific cause.

Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specified homeopathic medicines and potencies are used for different disease and symptom patterns according to the Banerji Protocols.

A specific efficacy of homeopathic remedies for dysmenorrhea is not scientifically proven. In cases of severe, new, or increasing symptoms, an underlying condition should be excluded gynaecologically.

Important note

Very severe or suddenly new lower abdominal pain, unusually heavy bleeding, circulatory problems, fever, or pain during a possible pregnancy should be medically clarified quickly.
