Dizziness (Vertigo), Tinnitus, and Inner Ear Conditions

Dizziness, also medically known as vertigo, describes the sensation that the surroundings or one's own body is spinning, swaying, or moving, even though no such movement is actually occurring. Dizziness can have many different causes and originate from both the inner ear and balance organ as well as the nervous system.

The balance organ is located in the inner ear and works closely with the eyes and certain areas of the brain. Disturbances in this system can cause dizziness, balance disorders, and sometimes ear noises or hearing impairments.

How does dizziness occur?

Dizziness can have various causes. Often, there is a disturbance of the balance organ or the vestibular nerve. Possible causes include:

• benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

• inflammation or dysfunction of the vestibular nerve

• inner ear diseases

• Ménière's disease

• migraine, especially vestibular migraine

• circulatory disorders

• certain neurological diseases

• side effects of medications

• circulatory and blood pressure changes

Tinnitus – Ear Noises

Tinnitus refers to the perception of a sound without a corresponding external sound source. Affected individuals describe the sounds as whistling, humming, rushing, buzzing, or ringing, for example.

Tinnitus can be temporary or permanent and have various causes. These include hearing damage, severe noise exposure, diseases of the inner ear and auditory nerve, and other diseases of the auditory system.

Dizziness and Tinnitus in Inner Ear Conditions

If dizziness and tinnitus occur together, a condition of the inner ear or the auditory and balance system may be present.

In Ménière's disease, for example, episodic rotational vertigo, tinnitus, a feeling of pressure in the ear, and fluctuating hearing loss can occur together.

What symptoms can occur?

Depending on the cause, the following may occur:

• rotational vertigo

• sensation of swaying or unsteadiness

• balance disorders

• nausea and vomiting

• ear noises (tinnitus)

• hearing loss

• feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear

• unsteadiness when walking

• sometimes headaches or visual disturbances

Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment depends on the specific cause. To clarify, an ENT and neurological examination, hearing tests, examinations of the balance organ, and for certain complaints, further diagnostic procedures may be necessary.

Important Note

Suddenly occurring severe dizziness should be medically clarified. If paralysis, speech disorders, double vision, pronounced gait instability, disturbances of consciousness, or other acute neurological symptoms occur in addition, immediate medical help must be sought.

Also, sudden hearing loss, especially together with tinnitus or dizziness, should be medically clarified promptly.
