What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterine muscle. They are among the most common benign gynecological conditions and occur primarily in women between the ages of 30 and 50. The size of fibroids can vary from a few millimeters to several centimeters.

Many fibroids do not cause symptoms and are discovered incidentally during a gynecological examination. However, depending on their size and location, symptoms may occur.

What symptoms can uterine fibroids cause?

Possible symptoms include:

• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding

• Lower abdominal pain or pressure

• Frequent urination due to pressure on the bladder

• Constipation due to pressure on the bowel

• Back pain

• In some cases, infertility or pregnancy complications

How do uterine fibroids develop?

The exact cause is not fully understood. It is believed that several factors contribute to their development:

• Hormonal influences, especially estrogens and progesterone

• Genetic predisposition

• Age

• Growth factors of muscle tissue

In most cases, fibroids are benign. Nevertheless, they should be regularly monitored by a gynecologist, especially if symptoms are present or the fibroids are growing rapidly.
