Plantar fasciitis – Pain in the sole of the foot and arch / Discomfort extending to the Achilles tendon
Plantar fasciitis is a painful irritation or degenerative change of the plantar fascia, a strong band of connective tissue on the sole of the foot. It runs from the heel bone towards the toes and supports the longitudinal arch of the foot.
Typical symptoms include pain under the heel and along the arch of the foot. Discomfort in the Achilles tendon area can occur simultaneously but anatomically affects a different structure.
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms include:
-
Pain under the heel
-
Pain along the arch of the foot
-
Severe pain in the morning after getting up
-
Pain with the first steps after prolonged sitting
-
Discomfort with prolonged standing or walking
-
Tenderness on the underside of the heel
-
Pulling or burning pain in the sole of the foot
-
Sometimes simultaneous discomfort in the calf and Achilles tendon
After a few steps, the pain may initially subside and then worsen again with prolonged exertion.
How does plantar fasciitis develop?
Repeated mechanical stress and small changes in the tissue of the plantar fascia often play a role.
Contributing factors include:
-
Prolonged standing or walking
-
Running and jumping sports
-
Sudden increase in athletic activity
-
Overweight
-
Shortened calf muscles
-
Restricted ankle mobility
-
Foot deformities
-
Unsuitable or heavily worn footwear
Plantar fascia and Achilles tendon
The plantar fascia, heel bone, Achilles tendon, and calf muscles are functionally closely connected. Increased tension in the calf muscles and Achilles tendon can affect the mechanical load in the heel and plantar fascia area.
However, pain directly at the back of the heel or along the Achilles tendon is more indicative of an additional Achilles tendinopathy than pure plantar fasciitis.
Heel spur
In cases of long-standing symptoms, a bony heel spur may be visible on an X-ray. However, a heel spur does not necessarily cause pain and is not automatically the cause of the symptoms.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis can often be made based on typical symptoms and examination of the foot.
In unclear or persistent cases, ultrasound, X-ray, or MRI may be used to rule out other causes.
Treatment
Plantar fasciitis can be stubborn, but in most cases, it can be treated conservatively.
Important measures include:
-
Adjusting the causative load
-
Regular stretching of the plantar fascia
-
Stretching of the calf muscles and Achilles tendon
-
Targeted strengthening of the foot and calf muscles
-
Suitable footwear
-
If necessary, insoles or heel pads
-
Physiotherapy
-
Pain management as needed
For long-standing symptoms, further orthopedic or physiotherapeutic procedures may be considered. Surgery is rarely necessary.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various musculoskeletal complaints, following the Banerji protocols.
A specific efficacy of homeopathic remedies for healing plantar fasciitis or structural Achilles tendon damage is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary orthopedic or physiotherapeutic treatment should not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
Suddenly occurring severe pain in the Achilles tendon, especially with a popping or snapping sensation and subsequently significantly impaired ability to stand on tiptoes, may indicate an Achilles tendon rupture and should be medically clarified immediately.
