Neurodermatitis – Atopic Dermatitis / Atopic Eczema

Neurodermatitis, medically referred to as atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema, is a chronic inflammatory, non-contagious skin condition. It is typically characterized by dry, sensitive, and severely itchy skin, as well as recurring inflammatory skin changes.

The condition often progresses in flare-ups. Phases with few or no symptoms can alternate with periods of significantly stronger skin inflammation.

How does neurodermatitis develop?

Neurodermatitis involves a combination of factors. A significant role is played by genetic predisposition, a compromised skin barrier, and an altered immune response.

The skin is less able to retain moisture and is less protected against external stimuli. As a result, it dries out more easily and reacts more sensitively to irritants, allergens, and other environmental influences.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

  • dry and sensitive skin

  • severe itching

  • red and inflamed skin areas

  • flaky or rough skin

  • weeping skin lesions during acute flare-ups

  • scratch marks and skin thickening with prolonged course

  • recurrent eczema

Which body parts are affected depends, among other things, on age. In children and adults, skin changes are frequently found in the crooks of the arms and knees, as well as on the hands, face, and neck.

What can trigger a neurodermatitis flare-up?

The triggers vary individually. Possible factors include dry skin, heat or excessive sweating, certain skin care products, stress, allergens, and mechanical or chemical skin irritations.

Treatment and skin care

An important part of the treatment is regular basic skin care with suitable lipid-replenishing and moisturizing products. During inflammatory flare-ups, physician-prescribed medications may also be necessary, depending on the severity.

The goal of treatment is to stabilize the skin barrier, reduce inflammation and itching, and prevent new flare-ups as much as possible.

Important note

For severe, persistent, or worsening skin changes, medical clarification should be sought. The information on this page is for general information only and does not replace medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
