Neuralgic Pain – Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Nerve Pains

Neuralgic pains are pains that arise from irritation, damage, or dysfunction of a nerve. They are often described as stabbing, burning, electric-shock-like, or shooting pains and can differ significantly from ordinary muscle or joint pain.

Neuralgia can affect various nerves in the body. One of the most well-known forms is trigeminal neuralgia, which affects the trigeminal nerve – the fifth cranial nerve.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

The trigeminal nerve is primarily responsible for sensations in the face. In trigeminal neuralgia, sudden, very severe, and usually unilateral facial pain typically occurs.

Pain attacks often last only seconds to a few minutes but can recur at short intervals. Even slight stimuli can trigger an attack, for example:

• Touching the face

• Speaking

• Chewing and swallowing

• Brushing teeth

• Shaving or washing the face

• Cold air or wind

How does trigeminal neuralgia develop?

Classical trigeminal neuralgia often arises from the contact of a blood vessel with the trigeminal nerve near the brainstem. This can irritate the nerve and impair its protective myelin sheath.

However, trigeminal neuralgia can also occur in conjunction with other diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. Less commonly, tumors or other changes in the nerve area can play a role.

Other forms of neuralgic pain

In addition to trigeminal neuralgia, there are other forms of nerve pain, for example:

• Postherpetic neuralgia after shingles

• Occipital neuralgia with pain in the back of the head area

• Neuralgia after injuries or surgeries

• Nerve pain due to damage to peripheral nerves

• Neuralgia within the framework of various neurological diseases

What symptoms are typical?

Depending on the affected nerve, the following may occur:

• Lightning-fast shooting pains

• Burning or stabbing pains

• Electric-shock-like pain attacks

• Tingling or numbness

• Increased sensitivity to touch

• Pain from even light touch

• Recurrent pain attacks along a specific nerve pathway

Diagnosis and Treatment

Neuralgic pain should be medically evaluated, as different diseases can cause similar symptoms. Treatment depends on the cause and type of neuralgia. For classical nerve pain, special medications for neuropathic pain are often used. Depending on the cause, further neurological or surgical treatment procedures may be considered.
