Neuralgic Pain in Herpes – Nerve Pain and Post-Herpetic Neuralgia

Neuralgic pain is pain caused by irritation or damage to nerves. It is often described as burning, stabbing, electric shock-like, or shooting.

A well-known cause of such nerve pain is herpes zoster (shingles). This involves the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which remains in the nervous system after a previous chickenpox infection.

How does nerve pain occur in herpes zoster?

After a chickenpox infection, the varicella-zoster virus remains in certain nerve ganglia in the body for many years. If the virus is reactivated later, it can spread along a nerve and cause shingles.

This leads to inflammation and damage to the affected nerves, which can result in sometimes severe neuralgic pain.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• burning or stabbing nerve pain

• shooting or electric shock-like pain

• tingling and numbness

• hypersensitivity of the skin

• pain even with light touch or clothing

• itching or paresthesia

• typically a unilateral rash with grouped blisters in acute shingles

The pain can begin before the visible rash appears.

Post-Herpetic Neuralgia

In some affected individuals, nerve pain persists even after the skin lesions of shingles have healed. This is known as post-herpetic neuralgia.

The symptoms can last for months and, in some cases, significantly longer. The risk of post-herpetic neuralgia increases particularly with age.

Treatment

Shingles should be medically evaluated as early as possible. Depending on the situation, antiviral medications may be used. Special medicinal and non-medicinal treatment options are available for persistent neuropathic pain.

Important Note

If shingles is suspected, prompt medical evaluation should be sought. Especially in cases of involvement of the face, eyes, or ears, severe pain, or neurological symptoms, rapid medical treatment is necessary.
