Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). It affects the brain and spinal cord and can cause a wide variety of neurological symptoms.

In MS, the immune system targets structures of its own nervous system. In particular, the myelin sheaths, which are the protective coverings of nerve fibers, are attacked. This leads to inflammation and damage that can impair the transmission of nerve signals.

How does multiple sclerosis develop?

The exact cause of multiple sclerosis is not yet fully understood. It is believed that several factors work together. These include a genetic predisposition, immunological processes, and various environmental factors.

MS is not a classic hereditary disease, but a family predisposition can increase the risk of developing the disease.

What happens in the nervous system?

Inflammatory reactions can damage the myelin sheaths of the nerve fibers. This process is called demyelination. In the further course, the underlying nerve fibers themselves can also be affected.

Since the changes can occur at different locations in the brain and spinal cord, the symptoms vary greatly from person to person. Therefore, MS is also described as a disease with very diverse manifestations.

• Muscle weakness

• Muscle stiffness and spasticity

• Balance and coordination disorders

• Difficulty walking

• Dizziness

• Pain and other sensory disturbances

Course of multiple sclerosis

MS can take very different courses. In many affected individuals, the symptoms initially occur in relapses. New neurological symptoms arise, or existing symptoms worsen. Subsequently, they may partially or completely recede.

In addition, there are progressive courses, in which neurological impairments steadily advance.

Diagnosis and treatment

For diagnosis, a neurological examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are primarily used. In addition, examinations of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and further neurological tests may be necessary.

Various disease-modifying therapies are available for MS that can influence disease activity and progression. In addition, individual symptoms are treated specifically. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other rehabilitative measures can also be part of the treatment.
