Atrial Fibrillation (AF) – common heart rhythm disorder
Atrial fibrillation, abbreviated AF, is a common type of heart rhythm disorder. In this condition, the electrical activity in the atria is disorganized and very rapid. As a result, the atria no longer contract regularly and coordinately.
The heartbeat often becomes irregular and sometimes significantly accelerated. Atrial fibrillation can occur in episodes, persist for longer periods, or be permanent.
How does atrial fibrillation develop?
Normally, the sinus node, as the heart's natural pacemaker, dictates the regular heart rhythm. In atrial fibrillation, however, numerous disorganized electrical impulses originate in the atria.
Predisposing factors and possible causes include:
-
High blood pressure
-
Coronary artery disease
-
Heart valve diseases
-
Heart failure
-
Advanced age
-
Hyperthyroidism
-
Obesity
-
Sleep apnea
-
Diabetes mellitus
-
Excessive alcohol consumption
However, atrial fibrillation can also occur without any clearly identifiable heart disease.
What symptoms can occur?
Some people don't notice atrial fibrillation at all. Others suffer from:
-
Racing heart or palpitations
-
Irregular heartbeat
-
Skipped heartbeats
-
Shortness of breath
-
Dizziness
-
Fatigue and reduced performance
-
Pressure or tightness in the chest
-
General weakness
Why can atrial fibrillation be dangerous?
Due to the irregular movement of the atria, blood flow, particularly in the left atrial appendage, can slow down. This can lead to the formation of blood clots.
If such a clot is carried by the bloodstream to the brain and blocks a blood vessel there, an ischemic stroke can occur. Atrial fibrillation therefore significantly increases the risk of stroke.
In the long term, a persistently rapid heart rate can also impair heart function.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Atrial fibrillation is diagnosed with an electrocardiogram (ECG). For episodes that occur only occasionally, a long-term ECG or other longer-term rhythm recordings may be necessary.
Treatment depends on symptoms, duration of atrial fibrillation, co-existing conditions, and individual risk. Depending on the situation, the following may be used:
-
Medications to control heart rate
-
Medications to stabilize heart rhythm
-
Electrical cardioversion
-
Catheter ablation
-
Anticoagulation (blood thinning) to reduce the risk of stroke, depending on individual risk
Important Note
New onset of a racing heart or a significantly irregular heartbeat should be medically evaluated. Immediate medical attention is required if chest pain, severe shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, or signs of a stroke occur simultaneously.
