Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – HPV-positive infection
Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are a large group of viruses that can infect the skin and mucous membranes. An HPV infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and in many cases causes no symptoms.
An HPV-positive finding (HPV+) means that genetic material from one or more HPV types has been detected. A positive HPV test does not automatically mean that cancer is present.
How does an HPV infection occur?
HPV is primarily transmitted through direct skin-to-skin and mucous membrane contact in the intimate area. Transmission is also possible without full sexual intercourse.
Many infections are controlled by the immune system within months to a few years and are subsequently no longer detectable. However, in some affected individuals, the infection persists longer.
Low-risk and high-risk HPV
There are numerous different HPV types. Medically, a distinction is made particularly between:
-
Low-risk types: can primarily cause genital warts (condylomata acuminata).
-
High-risk types: can, with prolonged infection, cause cellular changes and increase the risk of certain cancers.
The high-risk types HPV 16 and HPV 18 are particularly well-known.
What changes can HPV cause?
An HPV infection often causes no symptoms at all. Depending on the virus type, however, the following may occur:
-
Genital warts
-
Cell changes in the cervix
-
Changes in the vulva and vagina
-
Changes in the anal area
-
Less commonly, changes in the mouth and throat area or on the penis
A prolonged infection with certain high-risk types can develop into cancer via precancerous stages. This process usually takes several years.
HPV and cervical cancer
Persistent infection with high-risk HPV is the most important risk factor for the development of cervical cancer.
Regular gynecological check-ups can detect cell changes at an early stage. Depending on the HPV finding, a PAP smear, further HPV checks, or a colposcopy may be necessary.
HPV vaccination
The HPV vaccination protects against several particularly relevant HPV types and can significantly reduce the risk of HPV-related precancerous lesions, cancers, and genital warts.
An existing HPV infection is not treated by vaccination. Depending on age and individual situation, vaccination may still be useful.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for different disease and symptom patterns.
Reliable elimination of an HPV infection or the treatment of HPV-related cell changes by homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Especially with high-risk HPV, the recommended gynecological controls and, if necessary, necessary treatments must not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
A positive HPV finding is not synonymous with cancer. Crucial factors include the detected HPV type, the duration of the infection, and possible cell changes. Therefore, the recommended follow-up examinations should be consistently adhered to.
