Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterine muscle. They mainly consist of smooth muscle and connective tissue cells and are particularly common during the hormonally active phase of life.

Cysts, on the other hand, are fluid-filled cavities. In the gynecological area, they frequently occur on the ovaries (ovarian cysts). Many cysts are benign and resolve on their own.

How do uterine fibroids develop?

The exact origin is not fully understood. Female sex hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone, play an important role in the growth of fibroids.

What symptoms can cysts cause?

Larger cysts can rarely rupture or lead to ovarian torsion.
