Migraine – paroxysmal neurological headache disorder
Migraine is a common neurological disorder characterized by recurrent headache attacks. The pain is often unilateral, throbbing or pulsating, and can range from moderate to very severe.
A migraine attack can last from several hours to several days and significantly impair daily life for those affected.
How does migraine develop?
The exact mechanisms are complex and not yet fully understood. A significant role is played by a genetic predisposition and changes in stimulus processing and pain regulation in the nervous system. During a migraine attack, various nerve pathways and neurotransmitters are activated, which are involved in the development of pain and accompanying symptoms.
Certain factors can trigger an attack in predisposed individuals. These include, for example, stress, sleep deprivation or changes in sleep rhythm, hormonal fluctuations, irregular meals, and individually different environmental stimuli.
What symptoms can occur?
Typical complaints include:
-
mostly unilateral, throbbing or pulsating headaches
-
worsening of symptoms with physical activity
-
nausea and sometimes vomiting
-
light sensitivity
-
sound sensitivity
-
increased sensitivity to smell or irritation
-
pronounced need for rest
Migraine with aura
In some affected individuals, a so-called aura occurs before or during the headache. This can lead to temporary neurological symptoms, such as:
-
flashes of light, flickering, or visual field deficits
-
tingling or numbness
-
speech disturbances
However, migraine can also occur without aura.
Treatment and prevention
Treatment depends on the frequency, duration, and severity of migraine attacks. Various pain relievers and specific migraine medications are available for acute treatment.
For frequent or particularly debilitating migraine attacks, preventive treatment may also be useful. Regular sleep, adequate fluid intake, regular meals, exercise, and recognizing individual triggers can also be helpful.
Important note
New, unusually severe or suddenly occurring headaches, as well as headaches in conjunction with persistent neurological deficits, disturbed consciousness, or fever, must be medically clarified.
