Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD)
Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic, progressive disease of the macula, the central area of the retina. The macula is responsible for sharp central vision, enabling activities such as reading, recognizing faces, and perceiving fine details.
Dry AMD is the more common form of age-related macular degeneration and usually develops slowly over several years.
How does dry macular degeneration occur?
With increasing age, metabolic waste products can accumulate beneath the retina. These deposits are called drusen.
Over time, cells of the retinal pigment epithelium and light-sensitive retinal cells can be damaged and die. In advanced dry AMD, larger areas of the macula may be affected. This is referred to as geographic atrophy.
Risk factors include, among others:
-
older age
-
genetic predisposition
-
smoking
-
family history
-
certain cardiovascular risk factors
What symptoms can occur?
The disease may initially cause few symptoms. With increasing damage, the following can occur:
-
decreased visual acuity
-
difficulty reading
-
increased light requirement
-
reduced contrast sensitivity
-
colors appearing less vibrant
-
difficulty recognizing faces
-
distorted vision
-
dark or blurry areas in the center of the field of vision
The peripheral vision often remains intact, so complete blindness due to AMD in the usual sense is not typical. However, central vision can be significantly impaired.
Difference from wet macular degeneration
In dry AMD, there is primarily a slow loss of retinal cells. In contrast, wet AMD involves the growth of abnormal new blood vessels under or into the retina, from which fluid or blood can leak.
Dry AMD can progress to a wet form. Suddenly occurring distortions of straight lines or a rapid worsening of central vision should therefore be immediately evaluated by an ophthalmologist.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Regular ophthalmological check-ups are important for early detection of macular changes. Examinations include viewing the fundus and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
For certain stages of dry AMD, vitamin and mineral combinations according to AREDS2 may be recommended, depending on the individual findings. For geographic atrophy, specific medicinal therapies are also available in some countries. Whether such a treatment is suitable and available must be assessed by an ophthalmologist.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various disease patterns, following the Banerji protocols.
A slowing or regression of dry age-related macular degeneration through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Regular ophthalmological check-ups and medically recommended measures should therefore not be replaced or delayed.
Important Note
In the event of sudden visual changes, especially distorted vision, a new dark spot in the central field of vision, or rapid deterioration of vision, an ophthalmological examination should be performed immediately.
