Osteomyelitis – Bone Inflammation / Bone Infection
Osteomyelitis is an inflammation or infection of the bone and bone marrow. It is usually caused by bacteria and can be acute or chronic.
Osteomyelitis is a serious condition. Without appropriate treatment, bone tissue can be damaged, leading to bone necrosis, abscesses, or chronic infections.
How does osteomyelitis develop?
Pathogens can enter the bone in various ways:
-
via the bloodstream from another source of infection
-
via open wounds
-
after bone fractures
-
after bone or joint surgery
-
via infected implants or prostheses
-
by the spread of an adjacent soft tissue infection
-
in chronic wounds, such as in diabetic foot
Common pathogens are bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus. However, other pathogens may also be responsible, depending on the initial situation.
What symptoms can occur?
In acute osteomyelitis, the following are possible:
-
severe localized bone pain
-
swelling
-
redness and warmth
-
tenderness
-
fever and chills
-
restricted mobility
-
general malaise
In chronic osteomyelitis, symptoms may be less pronounced and persist for a longer period.
Possible symptoms include:
-
recurrent pain
-
chronic swelling
-
slow-healing wounds
-
pus discharge
-
fistula formation
-
recurrent inflammatory flare-ups
Osteomyelitis and bone necrosis
Due to inflammation and impaired blood supply, parts of the bone can die. Such dead bone tissue is called a sequestrum.
Since dead bone tissue is less accessible to antibiotics, surgical removal may be necessary in chronic cases.
Diagnosis must be confirmed
If osteomyelitis is suspected, targeted medical diagnostics are required. These may include:
-
blood count
-
CRP and other inflammatory markers
-
blood cultures in case of fever or suspected systemic infection
-
X-ray examination
-
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
-
CT scan if necessary
-
biopsy of tissue or bone material for microbiological examination
Pathogen identification is particularly important for selecting the most targeted antibiotic therapy.
Treatment
Bacterial osteomyelitis usually requires consistent antibiotic treatment. The choice of antibiotic should be based on the identified pathogen and its sensitivity, if possible.
Depending on the extent, surgical interventions may also be necessary, such as:
-
removal of dead or infected bone tissue
-
drainage of abscesses
-
cleaning of infected areas
-
treatment of infected implants, if applicable
-
management of accompanying wounds
Treatment may be necessary over a longer period, especially in chronic osteomyelitis.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various disease and symptom patterns.
Bacterial osteomyelitis must not be treated exclusively with homeopathy. A reliable elimination of bacterial bone infection or dead bone tissue by homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Necessary antibiotic and, if applicable, surgical treatment must not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
Severe bone pain with fever, chills, redness or swelling, as well as purulent or slow-healing wounds over a bone must be promptly medically clarified.
Particular attention is required in cases of diabetes, immunosuppression, joint prostheses, or recent bone surgery.
