Infectious Conjunctivitis – Contagious Pink Eye

An infectious conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the eye's conjunctiva caused by pathogens. The conjunctiva covers the inside of the eyelids and part of the visible eyeball.

The triggers are usually viruses or bacteria. Particularly viral forms can be highly contagious and easily spread from one eye to the other or to other people.

How does infectious conjunctivitis develop?

Infection can occur through direct contact with infectious tear or eye secretions, as well as indirectly through hands, towels, or shared objects.

Common causes include:

• viral infections, especially by adenoviruses

• bacterial infections

• transmission through contaminated hands

• contact with infectious eye secretions

• certain infections related to contact lenses

What symptoms can occur?

Typical complaints include:

• red eyes

• burning and foreign body sensation

• increased tear flow

• itching or irritation

• swollen eyelids

• watery, mucous, or purulent discharge

• sticky eyelids in the morning

• increased sensitivity to light

With bacterial infections, purulent discharge is more common, while viral conjunctivitis is often associated with watery discharge. However, the cause cannot always be reliably determined from symptoms alone.

Contagion and Hygiene

In the case of infectious conjunctivitis, careful hygiene is particularly important. Hands should be washed regularly, and the eyes should not be touched or rubbed if possible. Towels, washcloths, cosmetic products, and other objects that come into contact with the eyes should not be shared.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause. Many viral conjunctivitis cases heal on their own. For certain bacterial infections, antibiotic eye drops or eye ointments may be necessary.

Contact lenses should not be worn during acute eye inflammation until the cause has been clarified and the inflammation has fully healed.
