Lumbago / Acute Low Back Pain – Acute Pain of the Lumbar Spine
Lumbago refers to pain in the area of the lumbar spine (LWS) and lower back. If the pain occurs suddenly and severely, it is often colloquially referred to as lumbago or "witch's shot."
An acute bout of lumbago can be very painful and severely restrict mobility. However, in most cases, there is no dangerous damage to the spine underlying it.
How does lumbago occur?
The symptoms can occur, for example, after an unaccustomed movement, when lifting, twisting, or bending. Often, however, no clear trigger can be identified.
Possible causes and contributing factors include:
-
muscle tension
-
overload or improper strain
-
unaccustomed movements
-
degenerative changes in the spine
-
intervertebral disc changes
-
irritation of small vertebral joints
-
lack of movement
-
weak core musculature
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms are:
-
sudden, shooting pain in the lower back
-
severe muscle tension
-
restricted mobility
-
pain when straightening up, bending, or twisting
-
protective posture
-
difficulty walking or standing up
-
sometimes radiating into the buttocks or thighs
Lumbago or Sciatica?
In simple lumbago, the pain remains predominantly confined to the lower back.
If, however, the pain radiates significantly beyond the buttocks into the leg along an irritated nerve, and possibly includes tingling, numbness, or loss of strength, sciatica or lumbosacral radiculopathy may be present.
Consider a herniated disc
A herniated disc can cause back pain, but it is by no means the cause of every bout of lumbago.
Further imaging, such as an MRI, is usually not immediately necessary for uncomplicated acute lumbago. In cases of neurological deficits, warning signs, or prolonged symptoms, further diagnostics may be required.
Treatment
In uncomplicated acute lumbago, it is usually advisable to stay as active as possible and avoid prolonged bed rest.
Depending on the symptoms, the following may be used:
-
adapted physical activity
-
heat for muscle tension
-
pain relievers as needed and appropriate
-
physiotherapy for chronic or recurrent symptoms
-
later, targeted training of the back and core muscles
Many acute non-specific back pains significantly improve within days to a few weeks.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various acute and chronic musculoskeletal complaints.
A specific efficacy of homeopathic remedies for the treatment of acute lumbago has not been scientifically proven. Necessary orthopedic or neurological diagnostics should therefore not be replaced or delayed.
Important Note
Back pain with newly occurring paralysis, bladder or bowel dysfunction, or numbness in the genital, perineal, or gluteal area must be medically clarified immediately.
Severe back pain after an accident, with fever, unexplained weight loss, or known serious underlying conditions should also be examined by a doctor.
