Allergic Conjunctivitis – Allergic Inflammation of the Conjunctiva

An allergic conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye triggered by an allergic reaction. It is not contagious and often occurs together with other allergic complaints such as hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

Typical symptoms include itching, redness, and increased tear production, usually in both eyes.

How does allergic conjunctivitis develop?

The symptoms arise when the immune system overreacts to substances that are actually harmless. After contact with an allergen, inflammatory mediators such as histamine are released. This leads to itching, redness, and swelling of the conjunctiva.

Common triggers include:

• Pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds

• Dust mites

• Animal hair or animal allergens

• Mold spores

• Certain cosmetics or personal care products

• Other individually relevant allergens

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• severe itching

• red eyes

• increased tear production

• burning and foreign body sensation

• swollen eyelids

• swollen conjunctiva

• light sensitivity

• watery discharge

Sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and nasal itching often occur simultaneously.

Seasonal and year-round allergic conjunctivitis

In seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, symptoms primarily occur during the respective pollen season.

Year-round allergic conjunctivitis can be caused by dust mites or animal allergens, for example, and persist for longer periods.

Treatment

If possible, contact with the triggering allergen should be reduced. Depending on the severity, treatment may include anti-allergic eye drops, for example, containing antihistamines or mast cell stabilizers.

Cool compresses and lubricating eye drops can also relieve symptoms. In cases of more severe or persistent symptoms, medical or ophthalmological clarification should be sought.
