Hypothyroidism – Underactive Thyroid

Hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid, is a condition in which the body does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This can slow down numerous metabolic processes.

The thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) influence, among other things, energy consumption, heat regulation, the cardiovascular system, digestion, muscles, the nervous system, as well as growth and development.

How does an underactive thyroid develop?

The most common cause in regions with sufficient iodine supply is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks thyroid tissue, leading to progressive damage.

Other possible causes include:

• removal of the thyroid gland or parts of the thyroid gland

• radioiodine therapy

• certain medications

• pronounced iodine deficiency or, rarely, very high iodine intake

• congenital thyroid disorders

• diseases of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus

• temporary dysfunction after certain thyroid inflammations

What symptoms can occur?

An underactive thyroid often develops slowly. Possible symptoms include:

• fatigue and lack of drive

• increased cold sensitivity and feeling cold

• weight gain

• dry, cool skin

• hair loss and brittle hair

• constipation

• slowed heart rate

• muscle weakness and muscle pain

• concentration and memory problems

• depressive mood

• hoarse or deeper voice

• swelling in the face or eyelids

• menstrual irregularities and impaired fertility

• elevated blood lipid levels

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, a misguided immune response leads to chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. Over time, less and less thyroid hormone can be produced.

TPO antibodies and/or thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg-AK) can often be detected in the blood.

Diagnosis

The following values are determined in particular to assess thyroid function:

• TSH

• free T4 (fT4)

• if applicable, free T3 (fT3)

• in case of suspected Hashimoto's, corresponding thyroid antibodies

In addition, an ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland may be useful.

Treatment

An underactive thyroid requiring treatment is usually compensated by taking the thyroid hormone levothyroxine (L-thyroxine, T4). The dosage is individually adjusted based on symptoms, laboratory values, age, and other illnesses.

Regular monitoring of thyroid levels is important to avoid under- or overdosing.

Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for different disease and symptom patterns according to the Banerji protocols.

A reliable normalization of a pronounced thyroid hormone deficiency or a replacement of necessary thyroid hormones through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, a doctor-prescribed treatment with levothyroxine should not be independently reduced or discontinued.

Severe untreated hypothyroidism can, in rare cases, lead to a myxedema coma with hypothermia, slowed breathing, and impaired consciousness. This is a medical emergency.
