Lymphangitis, Lymphadenitis and Inflammation of the Sweat Glands
Lymphangitis and lymphadenitis are inflammatory diseases of the lymphatic system. While lymphangitis involves inflammation of the lymphatic vessels, lymphadenitis affects the lymph nodes. These conditions often arise in connection with an infection.
Inflammation of the sweat glands or the surrounding skin structures can also cause painful swelling and nodules, especially in the armpits or groin area.
Lymphangitis – Inflammation of the Lymphatic Vessels
Lymphangitis often occurs when bacteria enter the tissue through a small skin injury or an existing focus of infection and spread along the lymphatic pathways.
A typical sign can be a red, painful line on the skin that spreads from the original focus of inflammation towards the regional lymph nodes. Colloquially, this is sometimes referred to as "blood poisoning." However, medically, it is not automatically sepsis.
Lymphadenitis – Inflammation of the Lymph Nodes
In lymphadenitis, one or more lymph nodes are inflamed. The affected lymph nodes may be enlarged, tender to the touch, and painful.
Often, an infection in the corresponding body area is the underlying cause. For example, infections in the throat and pharynx can lead to swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
What symptoms can occur?
Possible symptoms include:
-
swollen and painful lymph nodes
-
redness and warmth
-
painful red streaks along the lymphatic pathways
-
swelling
-
fever and general malaise
-
pain in the affected body area
Inflammation in the Sweat Gland Area
Painful inflammation and nodules in body regions rich in sweat glands can have various causes.
An important condition is hidradenitis suppurativa (acne inversa). This is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects areas such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and skin folds. Recurrent painful nodules, abscesses, fistulas, and scars can develop.
Acute bacterial inflammations or abscesses of the skin and its appendages are to be distinguished from this.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Treatment depends on the specific cause. For bacterial infections, antibiotics may be necessary. Abscesses may need to be medically drained and treated. Chronically recurring inflammations, such as hidradenitis suppurativa, often require long-term dermatological treatment.
Important Note
Rapidly spreading redness, red streaks on the skin, severe pain, fever, or a significantly worsened general condition should be promptly evaluated by a doctor.
