Simple Headaches
Headaches are among the most common complaints and can have a wide variety of causes. In many cases, they are temporary and do not indicate a serious illness.
Simple headaches are usually understood to be occasional, mild to moderate headaches that are not associated with a serious underlying condition.
How do headaches occur?
The brain tissue itself has no pain receptors. Headaches arise from the irritation or activation of pain-sensitive structures in the area of the meninges, blood vessels, nerves, and the head and neck muscles.
Common triggers can be:
-
Stress and psychological tension
-
Lack of sleep or altered sleep rhythm
-
Dehydration
-
Extended screen time
-
Tension in the neck and shoulder area
-
Irregular meals
-
Alcohol
-
Changes in caffeine consumption
-
Physical or mental overexertion
How do simple headaches manifest?
These are often tension headaches. They are usually described as dull, throbbing, or pulling and can occur on both sides. There is often a feeling of pressure or a tight band around the head.
The symptoms can last for a few hours, but occasionally longer.
When should headaches be medically evaluated?
New, unusually severe, or increasingly frequent headaches should be medically evaluated. This is especially true for suddenly appearing very severe headaches or if additional symptoms such as fever, neck stiffness, disturbances of consciousness, visual disturbances, speech disorders, paralysis, or other neurological deficits occur.
