Laryngitis – Inflammation of the Larynx and Vocal Cords
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the larynx. The vocal folds or vocal cords are often also affected. Typical consequences include hoarseness, a changed voice, or temporary voice loss.
Laryngitis can be acute or chronic.
How does laryngitis develop?
Acute laryngitis often occurs as part of a viral upper respiratory tract infection, for example, with a common cold.
Further possible causes and contributing factors include:
-
viral respiratory infections
-
strenuous or prolonged vocal strain
-
dry or irritating air
-
smoking
-
chemical or other inhaled irritants
-
gastroesophageal or laryngopharyngeal reflux
-
allergies
-
more rarely, bacterial or other infections
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms include:
-
hoarseness
-
rough or weak voice
-
temporary voice loss
-
scratchy or burning sensation in the throat
-
dry cough and urge to cough
-
frequent throat clearing
-
pain or discomfort when speaking
-
sensation of dryness or foreign body in the throat
-
in case of infections, additionally runny nose, sore throat, or fever
Vocal Cords and Voice
The vocal folds are located in the larynx and are set into vibration to produce sound. In case of inflammation, they swell and can no longer vibrate normally. This makes the voice rough, hoarse, or weak.
During acute laryngitis, the voice should be rested as much as possible. Whispering can also strain the voice and is therefore not necessarily better than calm, quiet speaking.
Chronic Laryngitis
If the inflammation persists for a longer period, it is called chronic laryngitis. Possible causes include in particular prolonged vocal strain, smoking, repeated irritation by pollutants, or reflux.
Persistent hoarseness should be examined by an ENT doctor to rule out changes in the vocal folds and other diseases of the larynx.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. In uncomplicated viral laryngitis, the focus is primarily on vocal rest, adequate fluid intake, and avoidance of irritants.
For persistent symptoms, an examination of the larynx using laryngoscopy may be necessary. In cases of vocal misuse or overuse, speech therapy may also be useful.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for different diseases and symptoms according to the Banerji protocols.
A specific efficacy of homeopathic remedies for the treatment of laryngitis is not scientifically proven. In case of persistent hoarseness or other striking symptoms, an ENT examination should not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
Shortness of breath, wheezing or noisy breathing, severe swallowing difficulties, or rapidly increasing swelling in the neck area must be medically clarified immediately.
Hoarseness that lasts longer than about three weeks should be examined by an ENT doctor, especially in smokers.
