Hyperparathyroidism – Overactive Parathyroid Glands
Hyperparathyroidism is a hormonal disorder in which the parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH).
Parathyroid hormone plays a central role in regulating calcium and phosphate balance. Persistently elevated parathyroid hormone levels can particularly affect bones, kidneys, and mineral metabolism.
How does hyperparathyroidism develop?
Different forms are distinguished:
-
Primary hyperparathyroidism: The cause lies directly in the parathyroid glands. Often, there is a benign adenoma of one parathyroid gland, less frequently an enlargement of several glands.
-
Secondary hyperparathyroidism: The parathyroid glands produce increased PTH in response to a long-standing calcium deficiency or a disturbance of calcium-phosphate metabolism. A common cause is chronic kidney disease; severe vitamin D deficiency can also play a role.
-
Tertiary hyperparathyroidism: After a long-standing secondary hyperparathyroidism, the parathyroid glands can increasingly produce PTH independently.
What are the effects of too much parathyroid hormone?
In primary hyperparathyroidism, the increased PTH effect often leads to elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia). At the same time, more calcium can be released from the bones.
Possible consequences include:
-
Osteoporosis and reduced bone density
-
Bone and joint pain
-
Kidney stones
-
Increased urination and severe thirst
-
Fatigue and muscle weakness
-
Constipation and other gastrointestinal complaints
-
Concentration and performance disorders
-
In severe hypercalcemia, cardiac arrhythmias and neurological symptoms
However, many affected individuals initially experience no or only minor symptoms.
Bone changes – Osteitis fibrosa cystica
In severe, long-standing hyperparathyroidism, pronounced bone changes can occur. These are referred to as osteitis fibrosa cystica.
Historically, the term Osteodystrophia fibrosa generalisata von Recklinghausen was also used. This condition must not be confused with Neurofibromatosis type 1, which is also referred to as Recklinghausen's disease.
Diagnosis
The following laboratory values are particularly important for diagnosis:
-
Parathyroid hormone (PTH)
-
Calcium
-
Phosphate
-
Vitamin D
-
Kidney function
Depending on the findings, additional bone density scans, kidney examinations, and imaging studies of the parathyroid glands may be performed.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. In primary hyperparathyroidism, particularly with corresponding findings, surgical removal of the affected parathyroid gland may be necessary.
In secondary hyperparathyroidism, the focus is on treating the underlying disturbance of calcium, phosphate, and vitamin D metabolism or kidney disease.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various disease and symptom patterns.
A reliable normalization of pathologically elevated parathyroid hormone or calcium levels, or the treatment of a parathyroid adenoma with homeopathic remedies, is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary endocrinological diagnostics and treatment should not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
Significantly elevated calcium levels can constitute a medical emergency, especially in cases of severe weakness, vomiting, dehydration, confusion, impaired consciousness, or cardiac arrhythmias.
