Hypertension – High Blood Pressure
Arterial hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a condition where blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. It is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases and can exist for many years without causing noticeable symptoms.
Untreated high blood pressure can, in the long term, damage blood vessels, heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes, and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
How does high blood pressure develop?
In most affected individuals, no single cause can be identified. This is referred to as primary or essential hypertension. Various factors interact in this process.
Favorable factors include:
-
genetic predisposition
-
increasing age
-
obesity
-
lack of physical activity
-
high salt consumption in susceptible individuals
-
regular high alcohol consumption
-
smoking
-
chronic stress
In secondary hypertension, elevated blood pressure is a consequence of another disease or certain medications. Possible causes include kidney diseases, hormonal disorders, sleep apnea, or certain drugs.
What symptoms can occur?
High blood pressure often causes no symptoms for a long time. Therefore, it is sometimes only discovered during a routine blood pressure measurement.
With significantly elevated values, symptoms that may occur include:
-
headaches
-
dizziness
-
tinnitus
-
palpitations
-
shortness of breath
-
nosebleeds
-
visual disturbances
However, these symptoms are not specific to high blood pressure.
What can be the consequences of high blood pressure?
Persistently elevated blood pressure strains the vessel walls and can promote the development of vascular damage and arteriosclerosis. This increases the risk of, among other things:
-
heart attack
-
stroke
-
heart failure
-
cardiac arrhythmias
-
kidney damage
-
retinal damage
-
vascular diseases and aneurysms
Diagnosis and Treatment
Repeated blood pressure measurements are required for diagnosis. Home blood pressure monitoring or 24-hour blood pressure monitoring are also often used.
Treatment depends on the blood pressure level and individual cardiovascular risk. Measures include regular exercise, weight normalization, adapted diet, restriction of excessive salt and alcohol consumption, and, if necessary, blood-pressure-lowering medications.
Important Note
Very high blood pressure values in conjunction with chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headaches, visual disturbances, confusion, paralysis, or other neurological deficits can indicate a medical emergency and must be clarified immediately.
