Hypercholesterolemia – Elevated Cholesterol Related to Liver, Bile, and Digestive Metabolism

Hypercholesterolemia refers to an elevated concentration of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is not only absorbed through food but is also produced to a significant extent by the body itself, particularly in the liver.

The liver, bile, and intestines play an important role in cholesterol and bile acid metabolism. Nevertheless, hypercholesterolemia is primarily a lipid metabolism disorder and not an actual gastrointestinal disease.

Connection between Liver, Bile, and Cholesterol

The liver has a central function in cholesterol metabolism. It:

• produces cholesterol

• absorbs cholesterol from the blood

• uses cholesterol to form bile acids

• releases cholesterol and bile acids into the intestine via bile

A portion of the bile acids is then reabsorbed in the intestine and transported back to the liver.

What Can Cause Elevated Cholesterol Levels?

However, hypercholesterolemia in the blood does not automatically mean that cholesterol gallstones will form. Both processes are related but not identical.

Elevated cholesterol levels usually cause no gastrointestinal symptoms.

• thyroid values

If a liver or bile duct disease is suspected, an ultrasound of the upper abdomen may also be useful.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause, the level of LDL cholesterol, and individual cardiovascular risk.

This includes:

• dietary adjustments

• regular exercise

• weight reduction for obesity

• treatment of an underlying liver, bile, or metabolic disorder

• if necessary, cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins, ezetimibe, or other suitable active ingredients
